Cornwall v Middlesex - It’s a long way Home!

Our third County match of the season saw us taking the long journey to Cornwall and after another unsuccessful weekend the return journey seemed even longer.

The 1st 4 sets in the Men’s “B” ended even, with wins from Jim Byrne & Joe Stone giving us our best start so far this season. Coreen won the first of the Ladies “B” games with a L.O.M winning 16.89 average.

With Cornwall winning the next 2 sets, the second Men’s session started with Middlesex 3-4 down. A great debut win from Allan Bond and wins from Nick Patel and M.O.M the returning Eddie Collinge (25.77) put us back in front then it was back to the Ladies. Both the Daly birds were unlucky to lose 2-3 in 17+ averages before Deneice Lewis clinched the final point to leave us with a 2-4 deficit.

The last Men’s games of the day saw honours even, with wins from Mick Ward and Richard Collins giving us a 7-5 win.

Sunday started with the overall score at 9-9 and expectations high. Fatal winning his 100th County game for Middlesex, was our only winner in the first seven games of the afternoon as our Men went 1-3 down and our Ladies failed to get a point.

The second Men’s session was an improvement as Tony Hook, T-Bone and “Capitano” Mark (you lookin for trouble) Haggerty all won their games.  Lisa Norton followed her “Fella” and got the L.O.M award with a 17.82 average. Maggie had a great game with Nikki Furse (24.63) and was unlucky to lose 2-3 with a 21.49 average.

So a 1-5 defeat for our Ladies left us needing to win all four of the remaining matches for a draw, unfortunately our 1st player on, Graham, had to put up with several interruptions from a Cornish prat while he was practising and was nowhere near his recent form. The “Pocket Rocket” Stevie Hyatt with a M.O.M 26.49 average was our only winner and an end result of 15-21. Just a bit of time to regroup before our next match away to table toppers Gwent.

Middlesex v Derbyshire

Our first home game was against Derbyshire and it looked like our Men had adjusted to the early start when our late replacement Chris Hill put in a Man of the Match performance with a 23.76 average to put us 1-0 up. However, we lost the next 3 games and looked to the Ladies to give us something to shout about. Wins from Dee Jules-Stock, in probably Her best performance yet, Lady of the Match Coreen Loffler (18.73) and Deneice Lewis certainly upped the Middlesex noise levels and two wins in the next two games from Scott Robertson and John Maudesley but we didn’t add to that in the next games. Our Ladies completed an impressive 5-1 win with points coming from Karen Daly and Lisa Brosnan. Our Men failed to win a set in the final session leaving us 8-10 down before the Sunday “A” games.

Tony Hook kept up his winning ways in the first game and a win from “El Capitano” Mark Haggerty left the Mens poised at 2-2 going into the first Ladies session of the day. The two Tina’s could not repeat last months victories leaving Helen Wingate as our only winner. Vegas Vern put in his second Man of the Match performance with the same 30.06 average and wins from Graham Inniss and Alan Taylor left the score at 5-3 to us. Back to the Ladies and wins from Maggie Sutton, Lisa Norton and Lady of the Match Sharon Heaffey gave us a 4-2 win. A win from Jamie Sadler put us 18-15 and hoping to see our first team win in 11 games. It was not to be though as Derbyshire fought back to win the last three games and end the weekend with a hard earned 18-18 draw. A special mention goes to our “new” caller Terry Hennessey who looked born for the stage and certainly did his bit in keeping both sets of supporters making noise all day.

Two trips next to Cornwall and Gwent (on both mine and Lisa Brosnans birthday, hint hint!) and that elusive win is surely not too long away.

Staffordshire v Middlesex

Our first County match of the new season saw us travelling to Staffordshire. It was also the first chance to play using the new format. It seemed to suit our opposition better than us as we promptly went 0-3 down. The returning Chris Moore gave us our first point before the Ladies took to the stage. Lisa Norton, with a Lady of the Match 22.10 average and Lisa Brosnan put the ladies 2-1 up Wins from Grant Taylor, on his debut and Tony Hook, on his return, came either side of a Man of the Match performance by Jim Byrne averaging 27.03. 4-4 for the men and back to the Ladies. Deneice Lewis was our sole winner leaving the final score at 3-3. The last section of the day saw wins from Mick Ward and Richard Collins and the teams all square going into Sunday.

Again our men struggled to get going although Gary Lewis was unlucky to lose 2-3 in a 26.70 average. Maggie Sutton was our only Lady winner. Any hope of a mens fightback took a blow when Mick Seager lost to a 31.31 average. The eagerly awaited game between Frosty the throw man and Vegas Vern Shepperd ended with a great Man of the Match performance from vern winning 3-0 in a 30.06 average. The last Ladies games gave us wins from the two Tina’s Moran and Neylon. Tina Neylon putting in an inspired 23.19 average to win the Lady of the Match and level the scores at 3-3. In the final games of the weekend Graham Inniss was our only winner resulting in a crushing 2-10 defeat for the men and an overall score of  22-14 to our opponents.

2006/2007

Middlesex v Sussex  - We’re going up! We’re going up!

Middlesex finished the County season unbeaten and on our way to the premiership with a fine win over Sussex in the game at Tithe Farm. Sussex were fighting to retain their place in Div one so we knew it could be close. Our Ladies “B” got us off to a good start with wins from Lisa “Bandit” Brosnan, Tina Moran, Malika “Magic” Lucas and, our Lady of the Match, Anita Daly with a 17.25 average.

The Men’s “B” followed up with a 7-5 victory, the points coming from Terry “The Bear” Andrews [despite being under the weather], Gavin Harrison, Mark Sherwood, Mick Seager,  Graham “Shiny” Inniss and Scott Robertson. Deano Nixon put in a Man of the Match performance winning with a 26 average.

Eleven points gained on Saturday left us needing just 4 points from Sunday’s games to clinch promotion. Any fears of complacency were soon dispelled as our Ladies “A” got their second 6-0 win of the season in a match that was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Five of the games going to the final leg. Wins came from Karen Daly, Sonia Duffy, Sharon “Fifi” Heaffey, Lisa Norton, Deniece Burton and our Lady of the Match, for the 3rd game running, Maggie “Legs” Sutton in a 20.92 average.

The Men’s “A” was another closely fought affair with every match going with the darts until Richie Davis broke the throw in the 11th game. Other wins from Peter Barnes, Mark Haggerty, John “T-bone” Maudesley, Jamie Sadler, Eddy Collinge and our Man of the Match, Mr Ian Long averaging 25.87. A final score of 24-12 sent Sussex down and got the champagne flowing for us.

A special mention goes to Steve Davis and Barry Page for their calling throughout the season and to Graham and Terry Andrews for their work with the visual stuff. Both our Ladies teams finished Champions of their divisions and our Men’s B were runners-up in theirs.

Top ranked players in the Averages were Malika Lucas [Ladies B] winning 7 out of 8 and ranked 9th in the country, Graham Inniss [Men’s B] 6  from 9, Maggie Sutton [Ladies A] 8 from 9 and ranked 14th and Gary Lewis winning 7 from 9. Overall, a brilliant season and trips to Kent, Hampshire, Cheshire and Lancashire to look forward to next year.

Don’t forget our presentation night on 23rd June [ which should be some party] and the Middlesex AGM @ Tithe Farm on Sunday 1st July at 11.00.

Bucks v Middlesex - Nearly There!

Middlesex in 2nd place travelled to 3rd placed Buckinghamshire for a tense weekend of Darts. In the Ladies B wins from Coreen Loffler (17.59), Tina Moran [17.89) and a Lady of the Match performance from Magic Malika Lucas [19.52) gave us a 3-3 draw. The Mens B also earned a draw with wins by Mark Sherwood (23.40) on his return to County after more than 10 years, Mark Barkshire continuing his good form with a 26.37 ave, Jim Byrne (24.17), Stevie Hyatt (25.47), Shiney Inniss (22.06) and our Man of the Match " The Bear" Terry Andrews with a superb 28.34 average. Brian "sweetcorn" Green was unlucky once again  and will surely get a win soon!.

All square going into Sunday and a great day's darts in prospect!. The Ladies A game was a high scoring affair, Wins for Sharon "Fifi" Heaffey (21.39) coming back from 1-2 with a vital 134 o/s in the 4th leg, Lisa Norton (16.89), Deniece Burton (19.69) and, once again, Lady of the Match Maggie "legs" Sutton with a superb 25.47 average gave us a 4-2 victory and the lead going into the final session of the afternoon. The 1st Men's A match saw us go further ahead with win by Ian Long (26.84) before 3 wins on the trot for Bucks saw the game level once again. Gary Lewis lost his unbeaten record 1-3 despite 2 180's, an 11 dart leg and a 27.65 ave. Ben "granddad" Stevenson lost 0-3 with a 28.23 average. Wins from T-Bone Maudesley (25.23), Eddy Collinge (22.22) in his 50th game, Capt Mark Haggerty (25.16) and Alan "Fatal" Taylor (25.91) put us back in the driving seat and wins from Roy Peacock whose average of only 19.72 could be blamed on Tina's 40th celebrations ( Happy Birthday to you) and a Man Of the Match 28.01 average from Richie Davis gave us a overall win of 20-16.180's were also scored by Maggie, Ben and Eddy. A very enjoyable weekend in good company and we wish Bucks all the best at their new venue next season. With Middlesex now being 15 points clear in 2nd place we are in a great position to be looking forward to visiting some new venues ourselves next year but no-one is underestimating our next opponents Sussex who are showing great spirit in their fight to avoid relegation and will be determined to spoil our party.

Surrey v Middlesex

Middlesex made the short trip  to Surrey on 3rd/4th March. A few of our players play in the Surrey Super league so we expected a difficult weekend, however, our Ladies B side continued with their excellent form and got us off to a great start winning 5-1. Good games from Coreen Loffler, Helen Wingate, Anita Daly, Magic Malika Lucas and Lisa Brosnan winning her second Lady of the Match award in a row with a 20.98 ave showed why they are at the top of the Ladies B league.

To say the Men’s B got off to a good start is an understatement as we won the first nine sets. Starting with brilliantly consistent throwing from Graham Inniss and a debut win from Peter Stokes, Mark Barkshire, Deano Nixon, Scott Robertson, Gavin Harrison, Stevie “pocket rocket” Hyatt, Jim Byrne and the returning Mick Seager all won before Surrey got a point on the board. The 11th set also went to Middlesex with Eddy Collinge, looking much more like his old self, with a Man of the Match winning 27.66 ave.

Going into the A games with the luxury of a 15-3 lead we still knew we would have to fight for every point and so it turned out. Our Ladies drew a good match 3-3 with wins from Fifi Heaffey, coming back from 0-2 down, and Sonia also winning 3-2. Our Lady of the Match was Maggie Sutton with a 19.27 ave. You have to feel sorry for Karen D who lost with a 21.83 against a 25.05 ave from Apylee.

The score now 18-6, we only needed to wait until the second game to clinch the match with a Man of the Match winning ave of 28.94 from Peter Barnes who luckily recovered from his previous days birthday celebrations to clinch a 3-2 win. Wins also came from Jamie Sadler, Mick Doabe, T-bone John Maudesley, Ritchie Davis and with Gary Lewis making it 7 out of 7 for the season we went into a 6-3 lead. Unfortunately we were unable to clinch any more points leaving the score 6-6 and a 24-12 win. Our 180 scorers were Stevie Hyatt, Karen Daly, Peter Barnes, Mick Doabe and Ritchie Davis.

This superb win leaves us just 5 points behind Cheshire and in 2nd place in the promotion race. Our next game is against the team in 3rd place, and 10 points behind us, Bucks, so our destiny is in our own hands. Eleven of the weekend matches went to 3-2 and we won ten of them showing the belief and fight we will need in the last two games of the season.

Middlesex v Gwent - awaiting report

Lincolnshire v Middlesex - awaiting report

Middlesex v London

December saw the visit of London to Tithe Farm. With the game being played a week after the other games in the division, we knew that a good win would put us up to second in the promotion chase. The weekend got off to a good start with our Ladies ‘B’ winning 4-2 with victories from Anita Daly [15/66], Tina Moran [14/81], Karen Daly [18/26] and a Lady of the Match performance from Malika ‘ magic’ Lucas with a 18/81 average. Our Men’s ‘B’ gave another solid display with their second 9-3 victory in a row. Wins came from John ‘T-Bone’ Maudesley [23/12], Deano Nixon[25/05], Ian Long [25/78], Eddie Collinge [22/77], Peter Barnes [22/54], the returning and all dancing Jason Clark [26/19], Ritchie [Middlesex on my back] Davis [ 25/92], Mark Barkshire [22/10] and an award winning 27/33 from Graham Inniss.

The game on Sunday started with the score standing at 13-5 as our Ladies ‘A’ side took to the stage. Any nerves about us throwing away our lead quickly disappeared as Lisa Norton [15/22], Deneice Burton [19/94], Maggie Sutton [18/11], Sharon ‘Fifi’ Heaffey [18/50]  and Tina Neylon [19/11] all took the points. Our last Lady on was the Dame of Darts Sonia Duffy who clinched a 6-0 victory with a match award winning 20/45. The men’s ‘A’ looked to be continuing the run, going into a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately we were unable to keep it going and in a ‘nip and tuck’ match we ended up losing our only session of the weekend 5-7. Wins came from Mark Haggerty [27/54] Alan ‘fatal’ Taylor [26/84], Gary Lewis [25/71] with a win over the man who loves Middlesex so much he played twice John Scott [boo], and Ben Stevenson[24/43]. Roy Peacock was our Man of the Match with a 28/90 average. Our 180 scorers during the weekend were Ian Long, Peter Barnes, Fatal, Ben Stevenson and Miss Whisper Tina Neylon. The match finished in a Middlesex victory by 24-12, a result that leaves London sadly rooted to the bottom of the table and moves us up to second place.

 Berkshire Youth v Middlesex

Our third game of the season saw us travel to Slough for a tough match against Berkshire. Following 6-11 defeats in our first two games a good performance was required and we were not disappointed. The under 18s won 6-3 with great games from David Everley [17/58], Jamie Grinhaff [16/16], Adam Cole [17/08], Elliot Domm [18/22] a good 1st win for Bradley Taylor [19/27] and a superb Man of the Match performance from Jamie Davis [ 20/04].

Our Ladies also got their 1st victory of the season with a hard earned win from Lauren Peacock [9/38] and Team Captain Lisa Brosnan winning her 3rd Lady of the Match award with an excellent 18/91 average.

Our under 21s had a superb 4-1 victory with wins from Peter Stokes [19/52] including a 118 o/s, Wayne Moulds [20/09], a 1st Middlesex win for Luke Langley with a 20/83 average including a 180 and our Man of the Match Terry Young averaging a superb 25/89. The final result was a 12-5 win for us.

Cheshire Cheers

Our third county game of the season saw us travel to Cheshire where, despite a late start, due to swans on the motorway [honest], we got off to a fine start with our ladies ‘b’ side getting a creditable 3-3 draw. Our winners were Helen Wingate[17.46] , Karen Daly[18.43] and our Lady of the Match went to Magic Malika Lucas with an 18.94 average. Vanessa Thomas showed glimpses of her old form, missing a shot at a double in the last leg of her 2-3 defeat. Helen scored the only 180 of the match.

Our men’s ‘b’got us off to a flying start with wins from Ian Long with a Man of the Match 27.04 average and Scott Robertson [23.28] on his 75th appearance. Brian Green won the 1st leg of the next set despite Andy Sugarman starting with 140,135 & 140 but went on to lose 1-3. We then moved into overdrive with wins from Jim Byrne[25.42],Dean Nixon[22.13], Graham Inniss[25.74],Richie Davis[25.47], Eddie Collinge[23.22], Peter Barnes[26.84] including a 116 out shot and Mark Barkshire [24.64] putting us into a 9-1 lead. Despite losing the next two sets we were optimistic going into Sunday with a 12-6 overall lead. Our 180 scorers were Richie and Eddie.

Things started to go wrong on Sunday when first Sonia Duffy was unlucky to lose in a 19.18 ave, narrowly missing a 120 o/s and then an out of form Tina Neylon losing to Jane Stubbs. A fighting 3-2 win by Maggie Sutton [16.86] gave us hope but Deniece Burton was our only other winner with a Lady of the Match 18.93 average. Lisa Norton scored our only 180.

So into the men’s A game against a very strong Cheshire side only needing 5 sets for a win. We got off to the best possible start with 3-0 wins from Terry Andrews [27.83] over Stephen Bunting and Gary Lewis also with a 27.83 average. A below average performance by Jamie Sadler followed, he was no doubt affected by the shock of discovering his hotel room had been burgled the night before. A man of the Match and Captains performance from Mark Haggerty [30.67] on his 75th appearance left us needing just two of the next eight for a victory. Sadly only Vern Sheppard [23.12] was able to gain a win leaving us with a creditable 18-18 draw and a feeling of what might have been. Our 180 scorers were Terry Andrews[x2], George Wilkinson and Roy Peacock with a 170 from Mick Seager.

 Middlesex Youth v Oxfordshire

Our 1st home game at Tithe Farm was against Oxfordshire and ended with an 6-11 defeat.  Our under 18’s lost 3-6 with 5 of our defeats going to the third leg. Winners were Elliot Domm [16.98] on his debut, Wayne Sheldrick also with a  16.98 ave and a Man of the Match performance from Jamie Grinhaff winning his legs in 20 & 21 darts for a 24.44 average. Bradley Taylor was unlucky on his debut losing in a 20.74 average. Unfortunately we only had two ladies with Lady of the Match Lisa Brosnan[14.31] gaining our point in a 1-2 defeat.  The under 21 game ended in a 2-3 defeat with wins by Peter Stokes [18.50] and our Man of the Match Wayne Moulds [18.79]. Note to other counties: no poaching. Debutant Luke Langley was unlucky to lose 2-3 in a 20.76 average.

Two out of Two - Hertfordshire and Dorset

The county season has started again and our first game was at the Shamrock club against Hertfordshire. Our Ladies B side got us of to a flying start with a 5-1 win, Helen Wingate [11.83], Anita Daly [15.35], Deneice Burton [18.90] and Vanessa Thomas [14.87] all hitting their doubles. Karen Daly was our Lady of the match winning in a 19.86 Ave. In the men’s B game we went 3-0 down before  wins by Martyn Miles [20.00]  and Terry Andrews stopped the rot, or so we thought as we then lost the next 5 games. Wins by Richard Collins [22.77] and the returning Ian Long [24.24] made the result 4-8 in Herts. favour and 9-9 going into Sundays matches. Terry was our man of the match with a 25.91 Ave.

The ladies A Game was a hard fought affair which ended with honours even, Lisa Norton won 3-1[19.03] and great comebacks from 2-0 down by Sharon Heaffey [19.06]  and Maggie Sutton gave us a share of the points, Maggie was our Lady of the match with a 21.53 Ave.

Alan Taylor[23.03] continued his winning run and wins by Jamie Sadler [28.51], Mark Haggerty with a Man of the Match 29.18, Vern Shepherd [24.07],Ben Stevenson[23.32] and Scott Robertson [23.48] put us 6-1 up and further wins by Gary Lewis [26.49] and Roy Peacock [ 23.07] made the final score 8-4 and gave us an overall match win 20-16.

Just two weeks later saw us playing our first game at our new venue Tithe Farm Social Club against our old rivals Dorset.

The match started with a hard earned draw for our Ladies B side 3-3, coming back from 1-3 with wins from Helen Wingate [17.25], Karen Daly [16.34] and our Lady of the Match Anita Daly with a 18.22 Ave. The Men’s B got off to the worst possible start going 0-5 down despite good games from Dean Nixon and our new boy Richie Davis. Ian Long [24.41] pulled a set back and then wins from Jim Byrne [24.24], Graham Inniss [21.08], John Maudesley {24.69] and a Man of the Match performance from the returning Mark Barkshire [25.47] made the score a more respectable 8-10. On to Sunday and the day started with a 4-2 win for our Ladies A with wins from Lisa Norton [16.22], Sonia Duffy [18.11], Maggie Sutton [19.15] and our Lady of the match, Tina [miss whisper] Neylon [19.85]. Sharon Heaffey was unlucky to lose 0-3 to an in form Caroline Carter despite scoring a 180 and a 19.59 Average. So onto the Men’s game with the scores level at 12-12.

First up was Mick Seager in his 100th appearance losing to another in form Carter, Paul this time. Captain Mark Haggerty [24.38] couldn’t repeat last months M.o.M performance and lost before wins by Ben Stevenson[28.88, Man of the Match], a Debut win for John Coward [27.11], Roy peacock [28.36], Jamie Sadler [23.55] also making his 100th appearance, Mick Doabe [23.21], George Wilkinson[23.95], Gary Lewis [20.79] and finally, “The Bear” Terry Andrews clinched a hard fought 20-16 victory.

Middlesex Youth v Essex

The Youth played their first game of the season away to a very strong Essex side. The under 18’s lost 3-6 with wins by David Everley [16.16], Jack Naylor [19.65] and Danny Gould making his return with a Man of the Match 22.77 Average. Jamie Grinhaff was unlucky to lose a very good match with a 20.93 Average. Our Ladies lost 1-2 with our lone winner being Lisa Brosnan in a 10.89 Average. The under 21’s lost2-3 with wins by Peter Stokes [16.74] and a Man of the match 22.77 by Terry “ London B” Young. Wayne Moulds was unlucky to lose in a 21.74 Average.
