Security whilst you are on holiday

Updated: May 16

Easter is a time when many of us take a break or visit friends and relatives. I know that, you know that, and so do burglars, so it is important to minimise the risk to you home and possessions.

SDL customers will have either an alarm, CCTV/Video cameras, or WiFi doorbells, so they are likely to me more aware that others, but from time to time we should re-evaluate - So here are some tips.

1 – Install security systems that you may not have such as a Qolsys alarm, ADC Cameras and ADC Doorbells as described above - I would start with this wouldn't I.

2 - Ensure that all of your door and window locks are in working condition, and lock them ALL when leaving home. Perhaps this is obvious, but the burglar only needs one entry point.

3 –Let your trusted neighbours know that you are away. They can keep a close eye on your home and they let you know if anything unusual is going on. Having said that, if you have an ADC camera or ADC Wifi doorbell you might not need them at all as you can get instant notifications of each event on your ADC app.

4 - Cancel your Deliveries. Some of you may still have regular deliveries, don't forget to cancel them, and don't order Amazon deliveries that might turn up whilst you are away. If you have an ADC WiFi doorbell to tell them where to store it safely.

5 –Social media. Holidays are great, so it's natural to want to share with your friends your good times, but not everyone on social media is your friend. Be very careful what you put on Social Media.

6-Timers. Use one or more timers to switch on/off lights at suitable times. If you have an ADC video camera or a Qolsys alarm system already it's best to get 'smart plugs' that are compatible with them. Not only can you get the smart plug to turn on lights in the house at predetermined times, you can also get the lights to come on when someone is in front of the ADC camera or if the Qolsys goes into alarm, and as such warn the burglar away before any damage is done.

7 –Tidy Outside. Avoid leaving tools or ladders lying around for use by would be thieves.
